About the Program This completely free program is dedicated to introducing fencing and bringing the sport to the underserved community. This free program also offers the opportunity to earn a scholarship to professional level classes. During this free program, kids will get the opportunity to learn the basic rules and footwork of fencing, in addition to getting the opportunity to fence each other. Below is a video from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, which is a great demonstration of fencing. |

What is Fencing? Fencing is one of the oldest modern Olympic Sports. The sport of fencing is divided into three disciplines or “weapons,” based on the training sword; this program will be focused on sabre. Sabre is based on cavalry swords so the target area is above the waist, including the arms and head (to protect the horse). You can hit your opponent with the tip of the sabre or use cutting and slashing motions (don’t worry, the “weapons” are not sharp!) There is “right of way” in sabre, so if both fencers hit, a referee will determine who started the action to award the point. Sabre is most similar to what people perceive as sword fighting and even lightsaber dueling has inspirations from sabre. |
